Tajuddin Ahmed, a strong supporter and political participant for the independence of Bangladesh, was the first prime minister of the country, from 1971 April 17 until January 12, 1972. He had become the prime minister of Bangladesh shortly after it's declaration of independence, on 1971 March 26, but the full independence was not achieved until the war ended in Bangladesh's victory on December 16.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, founding father of the country returned by then from Pakistan, and became the second prime minister.
