The president was Lyndon B. Johnson. He was a southern Democrat, and he became president after John F. Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963-- he had been Kennedy's vice president. After winning the election in 1964, Johnson decided not to run for another term and left office after the 1968 election.

The president from 1956 through 1960 (and about one month in 1961) was Dwight D. Eisenhower.

John F. Kennedy was president from January 20, 1961 to November 22, 1963.

Lyndon B. Johnson was president from November 22, 1963 through the end of 1964 (and actually until Jan. 20, 1969, but you only asked through 1964).
