Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr fought a "gentlemens'" duel in New Jersey, across the Hudson River from New York City. Dueling was illegal in New York, so New Jersey was the selected location.Hamilton refused to fire his pistol, Burr shot Hamilton. The bullet hit his liver and he died a painful death in NY. His grave is the Trinity Church on Broadway.

It was a duel between two prominent American politicians, the former Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton and sitting Vice President Aaron Burr, on July 11, 1804.[1] Burr shot and mortally wounded Hamilton. Hamilton was carried to the home of one William Bayard, who lived on the Manhattan shore. There Alexander Hamilton died at 2:00pm the next day, 12 July, 1804. A large bloodstain on the floor under where Hamilton had lain and died was not cleaned away by the Bayard family for many years.
