What is a Vice President's constitutional responsibility?

The vice-president has two responsibilities. 1) The vice-president shall replace the president in cases where he is not able to execute the duties of the office due to illness, resignation or death. 2) He shall vote to break any ties in the Senate. Since its conception, the role of casting a tie-breaking vote in the Senate has been exercised 242 times. His title shall be President of the Senate, a hollow title because he has no duties except for the two stated above. Traditionally the vice president is not present while the senate is meeting. He may be assigned additional duties by the president but, as the Constitution assigns no executive powers to the vice president, in performing such duties he acts only as an agent of the president.

Who became Trumans Vice President when he became President after Roosevelt's death?

John Tyler was the first VP to assume the office of president due to the death of the president. He succeeded William Henry Harrison (9th US President) who died after only 1 month in office on April 4, 1841. Tyler was at first considered to be only an acting President and was not allowed to move into the White House nor given any money for official functions. He disagreed, took the oath of office, and carried out the duties of the President. On June 1, 1841, both houses of Congress approved his status. But it was not until the 25th amendment in 1967 that a succeeding Vice President was declared President by law. Tyler did not run for re-election as President in 1844.
