The War Hawks were a small group of southern and western congressmen who convinced the House into supporting a declaration of war against Britain. These young, vocal members were outraged by the British practice of impressment (kidnapping) of American sailors, and the British practice of requiring trade with Britain being carried only on British ship,s which was crippling the American economy.

The War Hawks felt the diplomatic strategies of Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison were unsuccessful, and confident that Britain would yield to U.S. demands if it saw that America was seriously considering military action. Canada will still a British possession, and they felt Britain would not defend it. They were incorrect; the American invasion was easily repulsed, the British troops went on defeat the Americans at the Battle of Bladensburg, to burn Washington, DC, but were finally defeated by Andrew Jackson at New Orleans - a week after a negotiated peace treaty was signed in London.

The Invasion of Canada in 1775 was the first major military initiative by the newly-formed Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The objective of the campaign was to gain military control of the British Province of Quebec, and convince the French-speaking Canadiens to join the revolution on the side of the Thirteen Colonies.

Americans were outraged over the British impressing American sailors. Some wanted all British forces off of North America. Many thought that Canada would welcome joining Americans. However most of the Loyalists that once lived in America had moved to Canada so public sentiment in Canada was for king and country. Sir Issac Brock defeated American forces and took Detroit. Then Oliver Hazard Perry won the Battle of Lake Erie and took back Detroit. The British sailed to the Chesapeake Bay and captured Washington D. C. and burned the White House. However they were unable to defeat the Americans at Baltimore. Peace talks started and actually the final battle was two weeks after the Treaty of Ghent was signed. Andrew Jackson defeated the British at the Battle of New Orleans.
