he had less troops they were weak and exhaused and they hessians were going to attack them because washingtons troops/americans were fighting for independance.
On December 26, 1776, Washington's troops were victorious in the Battle of Trenton, primarily against the Hessians, German mercenaries fighting for the British.
The colonists were planning to attack Trenton on early morning the day after Christmas in hopes that the hessians at Trenton would not be sober to fight however only 1/3 of the colonists army made it to Trenton across the Delaware to fight the hessians but in the end the colonists suprise attack caught the Hessians way off guard and catipulted the colonists to victory in that battle.
George Washington decided to lead a sneak attack on the British on Christmas Eve. They crossed the Delaware River at night. The British soldiers, who had been celebrating the holiday, were all drunk or passed out. So when Washington's troops attacked on Christmas Day, the British offered little to no resistance.

Washington launched a surprise attack on the Hessian garrison while they were celebrating Christmas, catching them off guard. The bad weather also worked in Washington's favor, making it difficult for the Hessians to mount a proper defense.

On December 25, 1776, he and his patriots crossed the Delaware River and marched to Trenton, New Jersey. There, the Hessians were surprised Washington was there to attack. General Washington and his men captured more than 900 Hessians as a Christmas gift. Surprise, surprise!

The Hessians
Washington attacked on the night of Christmas. He didn't really attack the Britians but instead attacked German hessians. The war was supposedly "called off" for the winter, and therefore the attack was unexpected.
Washington defeated the Hessians after he crossed the Delaware River from Pennsylvania (now known as Washington's Crossing, PA) into Trenton, New Jersey. The Hessians had been up celebrating and Washington and his men surprised them, defeating them soundly in the Battle of Trenton (December 26, 1776).
