The framers of the Constitution were wise to provide a way for the document to be amended. They realized that society would change as time passed, and new issues they could not foresee might come up. So, the framers made the Constitution changeable, but hard to do so, so that it could not be changed on a whim.

It was necessary for the framers of the US Constitution to provide a way for the document to be amended so that the rights and freedoms of the citizens would always be secured. This was one of the concerns of the citizens as the country was newly formed and many changes had already taken place.

The Framers were clear thinking patriots and citizens. They also were historians. They understood that there would be circumstances in the future of the new republic that would require a change in the US Constitution. Certainly, as many of the Framers opposed slavery, there could be a chance in the future to determine whether slavery should be abolished or somehow changed. For example, the nation might wish to have laws that called for a slave to serve as such for a limited period of time and then be freed.
