Jamestown settled where it would have the most convenience and access from other cities. They chose Manhattan island because of its Natural Resources and proximity to the ocean.
Jamestown didn't come to Virginia to settle to look for gold and not to stay as a colony while the Puritans were there to stay and to create a colony.
The first English colony was established on Roanoke Island, in what is now North Carolina, in 1585. A second colony, the famous Lost Colony, was established two years later, but disappeared. A third colony, established in 1607 at Jamestown in Virginia, was more successful.
King James I granted a charter to the Virginia Company, a group of London-based entrepreneurs, in June of 1606. The charter granted the group the right to settle in the new world (North American continent), and found an English satellite colony there. The settlers landed on Jamestown Island on May 14th, 1607, and founded Jamestown on the banks of the James river, approximately 60 miles from Chesapeake Bay. Jamestown was the first settlement of English citizens, in what is now known as the United States of America.

The first permanent colony was Jamestown. While it did not prosper in the beginning it was the first colony never to be completely abandoned. During and after the leadership of John Smith things started to look up for the colony, and while it hit a few more major stumbling blocks it eventually became a successful enterprise
