The evacuation at Dunkirk had to take place or else large parts of the French 1st army, the entire BEF and the remnants of the Belgian army had been out maneuvered by the Germans who sent motorised and armoured formations through the Ardene forest surprising the light French defenders who were not equipped with anti air or anti tank weapons. Thus they were able to push towards the sea cutting off Army group 1 that had push to the Dyle river to help defend Belgium.

This Army group comprised the most modern units in the army, once cut off they were unable to be supplied and were evacuate or surrender.

Operation Dynamo, was put into operation to put get as many men back to Britain as was possible.

During World War II, the Allied defeat at Dunkirk (France) in 1940 turned out to be a kind of victory, even a turning-point of sorts, for primarily one reason. Despite the loss of large amounts of precious equipment, the Allies managed to rescue a huge force of men -- over 300,000 British and French (along with other) soldiers. For Great Britain, in particular, this 'rescue-victory' ensured that the country could fight on, rather than be forced into a premature surrender to Germany.

I belive it was due to the attack of all the Germans and the British would've got wiped out but for hundreds of little boats who rescued most of them. However due to Dunkirk, the allies lost their last western mainland area in Europe and the Germans started to win the war.
