Smith had travelled overland as a hunter and explorer. He was an early visitor to Alta California and lived with the Native Americans on Tulare lake in central California until a Mexican patrol came along and found him. It was the policy of the Mexican government to kick all Anglos found in California out, but this didn't stop Smith. He was one of the first white men in Yosemite valley and his knowledge of the trails and land was needed by the people coming west. There were few maps and men like Smith were able to guide the wagons to the west.
