Major Ridge supported the treaty because he believed it was the best option for the Cherokee Nation to secure their survival and autonomy in the face of increasing pressure from American settlers and the U.S. government. He thought that ceding land would prevent further violence and displacement. Ridge also aimed to protect the interests of the Cherokee people by negotiating terms that would allow them to maintain some degree of control over their future.
