Blacks were allowed to fight and did overwhelmingly on both sides.

"Enslaved blacks" were thought of as personal property as were indentured servants. From what I know, there were legal statuses given to colonial residents; Free, Indentured or Enslaved.

Nearly 9,000 blacks & native (though less indians) of all legal statuses served under Gen. Washington!

Initially Geo. Washington only permitted "Free persons of color" to serve in the continental army & navy as he believed it unnecessary for those bound as property either by contract (indentured servants) or permanent enslavement to fight as "Free men" when they truly weren't free in the eyes of the law.

There were tens of thousands of enslaved and indentured persons both white & black who fled their masters for the prospect of freedom with the British. I've traced 4 direct ancestral forefathers who served under Gen. Washington!

They willingly served and after the war received 100 acres of land and a pension.

The blacks who were enslaved prior, were freed and given on average 25-100 acres of land. Unfortunately, the Americans made that offer only to the soldier and not his woman and children still held in bondage. If lucky or had enough money, he could solicite the master to allow him to purchase their freedom.

Read: DAR, "Forgotten Patriots", Paul Heinegg's, "Free African Americans series", and Tim Harshaws, "The history of Black America". Blacks were only recently added to DAR's registers. Those who served can be found in county court military muster records.

Another tidbit..many of the free blacks who served in the revolutionary war can trace their ancestral lines to the Africans who arrived at the Jamestown settlement. The Virginia census for 1618 showed 17 African female (non-Christian) & 15 African male (non-Christian) were counted at Jamestown; nearly a year prior to the arrival of the so-called first Africans of Angola that arrived in Aug. 1619!

What was phillis wheatley in the Revolutionary War?

Phillis Wheatley was the first African-American woman poet. In her very short life, she wrote about religion, the treatment of African-American slaves, and death. She had to travel to London England to get her works published as no American publisher would do. Some Americans , such a Thomas Jefferson, did not give her rave reviews while other Americans did. One particular poem titled "To His Excellency George Washington" in 1775, that Mr. Washington invited her to his home in Mount Vernon VA in 1776. Her poetry is probably the first in line under the heading "African-American Literature." She passed away at a young age of 31.
