The water comes from melting snows high in the Chilean Andes within the boundaries of the Cascada de las Animas Nature Sanctuary in San Alfonso Chile. The amount of melt water varies significantly depending upon the amount of snow left by winter storms, and the time of year. During the spring months, the waterfall is at its peak as the sun begins to heat up the high mountains. However the greatest amount of water can be seen during or immediately following a heavy rain.
