Macedonia actually sided with Carthage and Hannibal during the Second Punic War, providing a diversion against the Romans by taking territory in the east.

After defeating Hannibal and tying Carthage up with a paralysing treaty, the Roman leaders decided to payback Macedonia for this intervention. They called a meeting of the Centuriate Assembly to get approval for an attack on Macedonia. The Roman people were sick and tired of war after twenty yeas and refused. After a week the Assembly was reconvened and was given a long list of the wealth of Macedonia and the rich spoils to be gained. The Roman people, impoverished by the war and their absence from their farms, suddenly saw the light, and approved the invasion of Macedonia to get their hands on the loot.

Hannibal later on, after resuscitating Carthage's economy, fled to Asia Minor to escape Roman attempts to assassinate him. He took leadership in inter-Greek wars there successfully, but the Romans tracked him down and he suicided to avoid being captured and dragged to Rome.

what were the strategies of general Hannibal of Carthage?

Hannibal of Carthage proved to be one of the best generals of his time. In the second Punic War his skills and tactics almost defeated Rome. Here are some of Hannibal's battle strategies:A. Surprise attack. At the age of nine, Hannibal moved to areas in Spain where Carthage had historical ties. He marched from Spain and over the Alps and to the surprise of Rome, his armies were on the Italian Peninsula. This feat is deemed one of the epics in ancient war history.B. The use of war elephants. Hannibal managed to march his war elephants over the Alps into Italy. These elephants were powerful weapons and could carry a small number of archers. The elephants caused great confusion among the Roman Calvary's horses.C. Superior cavalry. Hannibal's cavalries had superior numbers then those of Rome. He used this to his advantage and many battles were won due to the fact that Hannibal could use the advantage of large cavalries against Rome.D. The phalanx and heavy cavalry. Despite the weaknesses in the phalanx battle formation, Hannibal used it with skill and the spear men in this formation were successful. He also made use of heavily armed cavalry forces.E. The night march. Hannibal's troops were excellent in marching during the night and performed surprise attackes on the Roman legions who awoke to find the enemy so close.Using the above tactics and strategies, Hannibal proved to be one of the greatest generals that Rome ever faced. Hannibal, lost the Second Punic War as we know, however, he gave Rome much more trouble then they ever expected.

What battle tactics of Hannibal led to his victory over the Roman army at Cannae?

In the famous historical battle of Cannae in 216 BC BCE, Hannibal met the Roman armies of Varo. The Romans wanted to rid Italy of Hannibal for once & for all. This was not to be. Varo had assembled 87,000 troops to overwhelm the Carthaginians. Hannibal's forces numbered approximately 50,000 troops and were in a defensive mode as Varo unleashed his forces. The massive frontal attack began to push the front lines of Carthage backwards, and Hannibal's tactics have been recorded and studied by military analysts to this day. Here is a summary: 1. With the Roman push forward, Hannibal was in trouble as his troops were falling back while continuing to fight, it was not a retreat; 2. Hannibal sent his crack cavalry troops to successfully outflank the Romans on both sides; 3. Hannibal did have more in number of cavalry then did Varo and analysts agree that Hannibal's cavalry were better horsemen; 4. Hannibal began to complete what is now called the "double sealed envelope" tactic; 5. This was the ability of Hannibal's cavalry to attack the Roman army from behind, while successfully outflanking Varo on two sides; 6. It was a cardinal sin to ever let one's army be attacked from behind unless it was an ambush. This was not an ambush; 7. Varo's troops were sealed on four sides; and 8. Approximately 60,000 Roman troops were lost in a battle that was one of its worst defeats on the Italian peninsula.
