Over the course of its history, Nubia (largely covering what is now the Sudan) has not really risen to any great heights. Only in the eras of the so-called Thirteenth and twenty-fifth Dynasties of ancient Egypt - the first a period of about two hundred years, between 2,000 and 1,800 BC, the second a period of a hundred years around 800 BC - Nubia provided Egypt with a large number of pharaos and high public officials.

Before and after those two periods, ancient Egypt largely saw Nubia as a client State and trading partner and as a source of raw materials, soldiers and gold. After the Egyptian period, Nubia got divided into a number of smaller kingdoms, the northern part finally being dominated by the Arabs. In present times, Nubia - or rather the Sudan - first was controlled from Egypt when the British had effectively taken over control there. Afterwards, the Sudan gradually became a battlefield between forces from northern and southern Sudan, culminating in the recent division of the country.
