Princess (I think she is a princess not sure) Adriane led Theseus through the labyrinth. It actually wasn't the string it was her she was 100% mortal but she could she through the mist (the mist makes sure mortals can't see monsters or anything) so she could find her the way through the labyrinth.

A magic string that led Theseus out of the labyrinth. Answer 2: The ball of red yarn need not have been at all magic. Ariadne held one end, Theseus unrolled the yarn as he proceeded into the labyrinth, killed the Minotaur, rolled up the yarn and found himself back with Ariadne.

Theseus had to go through a giant maze called a labyrinth. Fortunately, he had a ball of twine so that he knew how to get out of the labyrinth, since it was said that the labyrinth was impossible to get out of. So after he kiilled the minotaur, he escaped the labyrinth with the ball of twine.
