they had to be recruited from a slave place. then they were trained and a few were chosen to be professional. they were then taken to a small fight and if they won they would be given money and would gain support of the crowd. they were then taken to a big games and would be given the wooden sword (a sign of freedom) if they were fantastic at the games.

There were several ways to become a gladiator. One was to get yourself captured as a prisoner of war. Another was to be a rebellious slave and have your master sell you to a gladiatorial school. You could be in debt and sell yourself to a gladiatorial school. You could be a free man who voluntarily entered the profession.

People became gladiators by either being a slave sold to a gladiator school, or by volunteering to take the training. Prisoners of war were also sometimes sold to gladiatorial schools, or sometimes they would fight for the amusement of soldiers on the frontiers, with the promise of freedom if they won.

Most gladiators were slaves whose masters forced them to become gladiators to show off how much wealth and power the masters had.

In some cases gladiators were volunteers who took the gladiatoral oath for a down payment to help their families - this was basically selling yourself into slavedom.
