How did the Romans view the Greeks?

They saw it as a mirror image of their own religion and adopted many of their gods, only giving them Roman names. An important factor in this was that at the time of Rome's ascendancy , Greek colonies were established all over southern Italy and Sicily. So it was only natural that very early in its development Rome encountered and adopted many aspects of Greek religion.

The Romans accepted the Greek beauty ideals as their own, implementing many of the creeks classical art and architecture in aesthetic. For example, Roman sculptors were influenced by Greek art but managed to move beyond the Greek's level to achieve a degree of realism that went beyond any found in the Greek classicism.

The Romans seemed to have a love/hate relationship with Greece. On the one hand, they admired the knowledge and artistic skills of the Greeks and they also based their government on the Athenian model.They used the Greek language as the diplomatic language and they sent their young men to Greece to study. Bu on the other hand, the Romans looked down on the Greeks as they considered them weak and effeminate and only interested in philosophy rather than practical matters.
