Latin evolved into its own language group like all languages do. As people from a parent language become isolated in geographic areas, word corruption, idioms and word use changes due to slang or cultural norms over time lead to language that is similar to the parent language but may not be readily understood by speakers of the parent language. That is why Italian, Spanish, French and Portugese are simlar in so many ways. They developed out of Latin, which was the official language of the Roman Empire. Hence these languages are called Romance Languages. Not because romantic sweethearts speak them to their beloved to woo her.

By the same laws of developement, Latin developed as a language out of the Celtic Italic language (from which Celtic came from). Celtic Italic was one of several groups that developed out of the Western European Language group which was out of the Western Branch of the Proto-Indo-European Family of languages.

Keep in mind these are modern divisions and names. The native speakers would have nver identified their native tongues with any of these terms.

English is not a romance language, but is a germanic language.
