In general, apart from the ruler of the Two Lands (North and South Egypt), the Pharaoh was the manifestation of Horus. When the Pharaoh died, he became Osiris (the father of Horus), and the new Pharaoh became Horus. One of the titles of Horus was 'the High, the Far-off', representing the discernment of a hawk flying high above the ground, yet observing the smallest movement (a useful characteristic for a ruler).
