It's only one of many theories about what happened to the ancient Egyptians and has not been proven. It is more likely that the majority of modern day Egyptians are in some way, even if just in part, descended from the Ancients regardless of their faith. This is taking into consideration that the Egyptians of old, especially those from lower (northern) Egypt would have mixed with Roman, Greek, Macedonian, Byzantine & Arab conquerors (all of whom were lighter skinned people), they would have also mixed with people brought in as slaves or settlers from the glory days of Ancient Egypt. The Ancient Egyptians would have had a greater resemblence to the African peoples of Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia and in fact such people are still found in Upper (southern) Egypt and therefore would be theoretically speaking the closest descendants to the ancient Egyptians.
