The beginning of the end of the Roman Republic was among the major changes of the First Century BC. Julius Caesar took control of Rome. Afer his death by assassination, his nephew Augustus took over, and appointed Marc Antony to rule Egypt while he ruled Rome. Antony, however, became besotted with Cleopatra, and Augustus became afraid they were after his throne. He attacked them, won, and consolidated his winnings into the beginnings of the Roman Empire.
