When Cortes arrived in Mexico, Moctezuma II was the leader. Later that year (1519) Moctezuma was killed and Cuitlahuac was elected as ruler.
Hernán Cortés conquered the Aztec Empire between 1519 and 1521. He arrived in Mexico in 1519, allied with various indigenous tribes, and captured the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlán, in August 1521. This marked the fall of the Aztec Empire and the beginning of Spanish colonization in the region.

In 1520 he led the siege of tenochtitlan and took completely destroyed the city, a city was later rebuilt near tenochtitlan named mexico city, after the mexica people who were what you think of as the aztecs, mexico city became the capital of the state of new spain "mexico" and cortez sailed on, reaching the philippines where he died.
