She was abducted from her mother by Hades. She longed to return from the underworld. When she was about to leave she was offered and ate a pomegranate (or some pomegranate seeds). This meant that the underworld was her home, so she could not return. In the end a compromise was reached, where she stayed half the year in the underworld and half the year with her mother.
