The origin of the name Jack is the middle-English Jankin (later, Jackin), derived from (and used as an informal nickname for) the name John (Hebrew meaning "God is gracious") or James (Hebrew meaning "Supplanter").

It is also probable that the name Jacques, the French version of James, strongly influenced Jack's modern form.
