Alexander didn't build an empire - he took over a ready-made one from Persia, making it his own.

He build over 70 Greek-style cities theoughout the empire from Egypt to Central Asia (modestly naming half Alexandria after himself), to try to convert those he saw as barbarians to Greek culture. These cities all had temples as part of the culture-planting.
