Boudica was the wife of King Prasutagus , the leaders of the Iceni tribe that origninated in northern France and Belgium. When the Romans entered Britain, the Iceni entered a trade agreement with them. This all went along fine, until the death of the King.
In 60 CE, Prasutagus died, and since the Romans (unlike the Iceni) were unwilling to accept a female ruler, they felt that they had the right to take over her land. Boudica was flogged, and her daughters were raped. She was utterly humiliated and was very angry at the Romans. Fueled by the anger of the Roman's treachery and brutality, she began to rebel against the Roman oppressors.
Boudica's army became a problem to the Romans when they destroyed their capital of Colchester and the temple of Claudius. Then, they marched to London, and St. Albans.
In the final battle, there were 11 thousand Romans against 150 thousand Britons. In terms of casualties, 80 000 Britons died, whereas only 400 Romans were killed. The Britons were said to have had no tactics in their attack.
There are two theories of Boudica's death- that she died peacefully, and that she committed suicide with poison to avoid being captured by the Romans.
