Hestia was goddess of the hearth and home in Ancient Greece. Her Roman equivalent was Vesta. She was one of the 12 Olympians.

On a larger level, Hestia (and moreso Vesta) represented the connection between a mother city and its settlements (or colonies) since a flame from the ever-burning hearth of the mother city would be used to light the hearth flame of the new settlement.
