A concubine might more commonly be known as a mistress. In history, concubine's were in long term relationship's with men who were from a higher social class. One of the most famous examples of concubines in biblical history is that of Hagar. She was the maid of Sarah, the wife of Abraham, who gifted Hagar to Abraham because she was unable to have any children of her own. Hagar gave birth to Ishmael as a result of her relationship with Abraham.
