Modern Egyptians use antimony eyeliner known by the Arabic name kohl.
Ancient Egyptians used the same cosmetic, but called it msdmt (black eye paint) or sdm (to draw a line). This was made of stibium or black antimony, trisulphate of antimony calcined and powdered. Grey eye liner was made of galena (lead ore).

The content of lead in any product used by people can lead to a greater risk of lead poisoning. This is not the only time that lead has been used in cosmetics; lead-based cosmetics were popular among the aristocracies of the Roman period, Middle-Ages and, Elizabethan era, as pale faces were a sign of wealth (as it showed they had not been outside labouring in the sun). Although risking lead-poisoning, the use of such cosmetics may seem preferable to the route of the 6th century, whereby ladies would bleed themselves to achieve a pale complexion.
