Where did the story of Odysseus come from?

Tradition holds that the blind poet Homer composed The Odyssey. He based the epic on a stories and characters that existed in Greek myths prior to Homer's own time.

Why is Homer described as the shaper of the Greek spirit?

Homer was the author of The Odyssey and The Iliad; both The Iliad and The Odyssey gave insight into what the Greeks not only did (as in tactics in war, as in the case with The Iliad) but a look into how they saw the Olympian gods in action; Homer preserved the ideals of the Greeks in his writings. He did not necessarily shape the Greek spirit during his time, but he cleared some obscure customs and beliefs for future generations.

How do historians view Homer?

My understanding of Homer's work was that the Iliad and the Odyssey were written as a record of events that may have occurred upwards to 200 years before his time. The stories were oral accounts of those events until he wrote them. (that is the understanding I received from class)

What is Homer in ancient Greece?

Little is known about Homer - no one is certain of the time he was alive, etc, etc.But he was a poet, who wrote The Odyssey and Iliad- two of the most influential poems in the world, which is agreed upon by almost every literary scholar in the world.

Why Homer's stories would have been used in education?

The Iliad and Odyssey were some of the first things written in the Greek language. And almost everyone would have known them to begin with- Homer was basically the rockstar of his time. It was only logical to use something so well-known to teach people how to read and write.
