Yes, Telemann was infact a composer from the Baroque time period, that lasted around the 1600's to roughly 1750. He was born in 1681 and died in 1767. Gladly, he lived a longer life than most in this time.
in the Elizabethan period, renaissance music was the music of the time (1400-1600). this of course was pre baroque music, the earliest period of music we know much about. this included composers such as Gabrielli, Birchois etc. Gabrielli is the most well known. lots of antiphonal music was composed in this musical period.
Mussorgsky belonged to the Romantic period.

Find a performance of a song by Thomas Morley, or a lute piece by Dowland, or a madrigal by one of the many great madrigal writers of the time. (Search using Morley, Dowland or madrigal)

It doesn't matter how long you've played guitar, you can pretty much compose your own music any time you want. As long as your music sounds good to you that's all that matters.
