The day before Odysseus and his men are to leave the island, Elpenor gets very drunk, and falls asleep on the roof of Circe's house. When he awakes in the morning, he forgets he is on the roof and falls off of it, breaking his neck and killing himself.
Elpenor ends up meeting Odysseus and the crew in the underworld later, and asks Odysseus to bury his body properly and put his oar atop his grave.
