To repeat the last thing someone would ask her bc she liked to gossip so she was cursed w only being able to talk by "echoing"
Echo, was the nymph in the story 'Echo and Narcissus.' Now Echo didn't have a talent, other than being able to annoy the living hell out of every one, until she covered for Zeus when he was in love with a Nymph. Out of rage Hera made her only able to say the last word said to her.
The myth describes why Narcissus Lilies (which we call Daffodils) always face down. Echo was already cursed by Hera to repeat what she heard, but in the myth, she pines away because of the spurning of Narcissus. Only her voice remains, creating the echos we hear today.
"A sound."
The parents of Echo were not named; she was however a Oreiad nymph, the first of these were offspring of the five Daktyloi and the five Hekaterides. Subsequent generations were descended from these elder Oreiades and their brothers the Satyroi.
Her curse is that she can only repeat what others say.
Aside from being the source of all of the names of the constellations and zodiac, Mythology was also the inspiration for a number of well known works of literature (Pyramus and Thisbe is well-known to be the inspiration for Romeo and Juliet). Additionally, popular culture derives much of it's imagery and sayings from mythology. The bow-wielding cherub is a representation of Cupid. Our ideas of heaven and hell stem from the Greek Tartarus and Elysian Fields. The word lethargic comes from the River of Forgetfulness, the Lethe. The names of the planets come from the assigning of sacred planets to certain gods. The days of the week were also named for the gods (though the names we use are German, the origin is still Roman, and hence, Greek). Echos, Narcissism, arachnids, phobias, Morphine, hypnotism and Trojan Horses all have their place in mythology.
