The Roman Empire passed through various stages from its first beginnings to its final collapse. Initially, Rome was ruled by kings, only to transform into a republic which lasted from 509 BCE until 27 BCE. From that point on, Rome thrived as an Empire until the "crisis time" of the 3rd century. After a brief recovery under a variety of emperors, Rome's western half was overwhelmed by Germanic invaders in the 5th century, while Rome's eastern half (which would soon be known as the Byzantine Empire) would continue until 1453 CE.
Among the many contributions of ancient Rome were concrete, central heating, and running water in homes.
