Sir Humphrey Gilbert sailed from Plymouth, England, on a 50 day voyage to Newfoundland in 1583.
Sir Humphrey Davy was a British chemist. He is best known for his invention of a miner's safety lamp as well as work in the fields of electro-chemistry. At the age of 19 while apprenticing under a surgeon, he investigated gases by preparing and inhaling nitrous oxide. He also isolated and identified iodine for the first time. He published his results in â??Researches, Chemical and Philosophicalâ??. He was a member of the Royal Society, was awarded the Copley Medal in 1805 ,was knighted in 1812 and made a Baronet in 1818.
