Rich Romans who had large houses ate their food in the triclinium, the dining room. Some of them were elaborate dinner rooms while others were just ordinary rooms used for other purposes when meal time was over.
The poor eat outdoors. They lived in overcrowded rooms on the higher floors of the insulae (tenement blocks) which had no running water or cooking facilities. They went there just to sleep. They washed at the baths, used outdoors public toilets and mainly eat bread which they bought at the baker's.
The common custom for wealthier people eating in ancient Rome involved reclining on a semicircular couch around a table of a similar shape, using knives made from wood or bronze, with an iron blade. They also used bronze, silver and bone spoons. The "common people" sat upright and ate their food with their fingers.
They would usually go to a tavern to eat. They also were able to get snacks at the bath houses. If they were richer they would also eat at their villa.
