When the romans did there battles at the colliseum, typically each warrior had two horses and there chariot. Before one battle, one of the warriors gambled away one of his horses. When going onto the battlefield the crowd stood up in shock and started to yell "une equis" which in Latin means "one horse" and the word transformed into "unique" :)
