The last name Matheny derives from the French town Mathenay, although from what I gather, many Matheny's came to Great Britain in 1066, with the Norman invasion. While the last name may be French, you may be more of a different nationality (if that makes any sense). :P

For example, my last name is Matheny, and the Matheny's in my family moved to lower Scotland and lived there before moving once again to Northern Ireland, so my French heritage kind of bled out, and my Matheny side of the family is large Scot-Irish (or Orange Irish/Protestant Irish).
