Religion had a dual role in the Roman world. Roman religion was a personal one, with people having their favorite patron god/goddess. Then there were the state gods who supposedly looked after the country. These were the gods who had to be honored or else they would take their protection from Rome. The honoring of the state deities was done on set dates with multi-day celebrations of sacrifices, perhaps theater performances and chariot races (depending on the god and the customs of worship). Personal gods were honored in private or at the shrines which were set up in most Roman houses to honor the family gods.
