Throughout the 16th century, many European powers attempted to establish colonies in the New World. These attempts by the Spanish, French and English generally ended in failure due to disease, starvation or wars with Indians or other European powers. The first permanent settlement in the modern day United States was by the English in Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. The Pilgrims followed in 1620, settling at Plymouth, Massachusetts. However, nearly 100 years before this time, the Spanish Crown had begun their conquest of the Aztec and Mayan Civilizations in Mexico and Central America.

The Spanish colonized nearly all of South and Central America, with the exception of Brazil (Portugal). They also reigned over Mexico and much of the Western United States. The French occupied much of the Central United States and Canada. A combination of the loss to the British in the French and Indian War and the Louisiana Purchase drove French influence out of the New World. However, England colonized what is know as the 13 colonies along the Atlantic Coast from Maine to Georgia. The Dutch and Swedish also had colonies in the area of New York, but were eventually driven out by the English.
