It is unknown who invented the round shield favored by soldiers of the Classical Era. It is thought to have developed over time from the early, probably hide and wood shields used by the Preclassical indigenous population of the area.

Newabortion006 "A soldier was a hero if he came back from battle with his shield. If he was alive, it meant he was victorious. If he died and was carried back upon his shield, he was a hero for having fought courageously. If he came back without his shield, however, it meant that he must have fled the battle, and he would be shunned by Spartan society." Source: http://www.glencoe.com/.../5
The main difference between the Spartan and Athenian is that Athenians wore a breastplate and did not have the Red cape that Spartans wore. Spartans did not wear the breastplate but instead fought only armed with Shield and Weapon.

The real Spartan shield, known as the hoplon, was a crucial part of ancient Spartan warfare. It was large and round, providing protection for the soldier's body and forming a shield wall when soldiers stood shoulder to shoulder. This shield formation, called the phalanx, was a key tactic in ancient battles, allowing Spartan warriors to advance as a unified force and overwhelm their enemies. The hoplon symbolized the discipline and unity of the Spartan army, contributing to their reputation as formidable warriors in ancient Greece.
