Pocahontas was a Native American woman from the Powhatan tribe, born around 1596 in what is now Virginia. She is best known for her association with the colonial settlement at Jamestown and her relationship with Englishman John Smith, as well as her later marriage to John Rolfe, which helped establish peace between the settlers and the Powhatan Confederacy. Pocahontas was also known for her role in promoting understanding between Native Americans and English settlers. She traveled to England in 1616, where she became a symbol of the "New World" and its potential for reconciliation.
