Nero ordered the execution of Saint Peter. He used the excuse that Christians were responsible for the fire that burned a large part of the city of Rome. He needed to hide his own blame for causing the fire.

Why did Nero kill St. Peter?

In 64 AD Rome was nearly burned to the ground by a huge inferno. Some say that Nero ordered the fire to be set so that he could rebuild the city in his own vision. Others say the fire was an accident. Now Nero had little use for the Christians who were now increasing in numbers throughout the Roman Empire. He decided to blame the fire on the Christian community and started a persecution to try and wipe them out. Peter, as well as Paul, were prime targets of Nero's wrath as they were leaders in the Christian community. Both were killed under orders from Nero sometime in 64-65 AD.

How was Nero a bad leader?

When Nero died, four men vied for control. The empire was in a state of chaos and unrest due to the ineptitude and insufficiency of one self-obsessed leader. If Nero had appointed a successor, much turmoil and many struggles could have been avoided. But, because he was selfish and narcissistic, Nero was afraid to tell someone that they could have control of the entire Roman Empire as soon as he was dead. Of course it is frightening to tell someone this, and we can not blame him for that particular emotion, but he should have had enough courage and devotion to his people to make a personal sacrifice to ensure that they would be safe and cared for after his death. Nero was a superficial man who only cared for his own personal welfare. His incompetence caused pain to many Christians, who always seemed to be Nero's scapegoat, and the majority of the empire was glad when he finally died. The upheaval that occurred after his death is an example of how much trouble he caused to the Roman Empire during his reign. I am thankful that the empire never had to deal with another leader as inept and unstable as Nero. Such a leader can bring a nation to it's knees in a startling short period of time, and if Rome had been forced to endure two of them I doubt it would have been nearly as successful or important in history.

Sadly Seneca, who as far as can be told had no part of any plot against his former student was forced ny Nero to kill himself.

Why was emperor Nero important?

Nero is one of the Roman emperors who is given a bad rap. He is blamed for the Great Fire of Rome, blamed for killing his mother, blamed for killing his wife, blamed for killing several aristocrats, blamed for persecuting the Christians, blamed for extravagance, blamed for vices, and blamed for bankrupting the treasury. However a careful study of his reign will prove otherwise on almost all the above points. As for the Fire of Rome, there is no proof that Nero started it, in fact he was not even in Rome at the time, he was at Antium some distance away. When he heard of the fire he rushed back to try to oversee things. Yes, he did kill his mother, but she was ready to do the same to him. As far as murdering his wife, we don't know the actual reason. As far as murdering the aristocrats, they were all involved in plots against him. His main "vice" according to the ancient writers, was his appearance on the stage and his appearances as a chariot driver. To the aristocrats, this was shocking and appalling. He did not "persecute" the Christians, he prosecuted them for arson. Nero today is remembered for his "dark side", but very little attention is paid to the beneficial side of his reign.
