In ancient times, the Roman Republic lasted approximately 500 years due to various factors. The military prowess and technological skills of the Romans are two such factors. Perhaps above all, however, was the character of the Romans: they doggedly valued and protected (and also promoted) their way of life as few other ancient societies did.
The Romans were good at what they did. They had systems and resources in place to keep the empire together - roads, communications, common language, etc.
On top of this they had the best trained and efficient army in the area - just in case anyone felt like leaving or disagreeing. they build aquaducts, roads and mills
The Republic wasestablishedwhen the monarchy wasoverthrownbecausethe last king was a tyrant. There was a rebellion and theRomanswere asked to swear never to let anyone become a king ever again, so as to never let tyranny return. Two annually elected heads of the city and the army were created. Having to men in charge meant that they couldcounterbalanceeachother. Theycouldalso veto eachother The short term of office wasdesignedto prevent anyonefromconcentratingpower in their hands.
The Roman Republic lasted so long because Roman civilisation lasted a long time: 1,200 years. Rome had a monarchy for 244 years, a republic for 482 years, and rule by emperors for 503 years. The question is more: "why did the Roman Republic fall?"

Well the republican period and the roman empire are 2 different things all together. If you look at Roman history at a glance you shall see 3 periods. First the regal period then the republican period and finally the empire. The republican period came about after the Romans disposed of the last king, Tarquinius Superbus. It lasted until the rise of Augustus as emperor. The republican system worked as a facade under the empire.
Augustus neither saved the Roman republic nor did he destroy it, he changed it. The Roman Republic had self-destructed by the time of Julius Caesar. Augustus, being one of the most politically astute men in history, used the mechanisms of the Republic to consolidate the power in himself. Thus, the change from Republic to Principate was for the most part a smooth transition. This was aided by the fact that the Romans were sick and tired of the civil wars and that Augustus had a long reign so the idea of the Principate could be firmly established.

The Roman Republic lasted for approximately 500 years, from 509 BC to 27 BC. It was a period in Roman history characterized by a republican form of government in which the power was held by the citizens and their elected representatives. The republic ended with the rise of Caesar Augustus, who became the first Roman Emperor and established the Roman Empire.
The Roman Republic was a republic fully because it was not ruled by a king or other aristocrats. This is the definition of a republic. That is all you need to be a republic. A republic can be a democracy, an oligarchy or a dictatorship, so long as it is not ruled by a king or other aristocrats.
The Roman Republic existed for over 4 centuries. It was the phase of the ancient Roman civilization characterized by a republican form of government. It began with the overthrow of the Roman monarchy, c. 509 BC, and lasted over 450 years until its subversion, through a series of civil wars, into the Principate form of government and the Imperial period. Because it existed for so long ... you're going to have to be a little more specific that "what happened?"

This is a confusing question. First please remember that Rome was already an empire under the republic. What is erroneously called the "Roman empire" is the Principate. The government of the republic was by popular election while the government of the principate was by appointment. Both forms of government used the senate as a consulting body.
