The purpose was to supersede Naucratis as Hellenistic center of Egypt and to link the valley of Nile with Greece.
The city remained the capital of Egypt until the first rule of the Muslims at 641 AD/ CE.

∙ 13y agoAlexandria was built because Alexander the great needed a safe harbor for his large fleet of ship. He chose the location because there was good anchorage, a good climate, nearby limestone quarries, and fresh water.
