Hey, they don't simply go into the cocoon; they make it. And they make it around themselves, so that they are in it.
Typically, the Caterpillar attaches itself to a branch, hanging down. That done, you can expect the chrysalis formation to start (the cocoon is now often referred to as chrysalis).
Do not help the caterpillar, the caterpillar will realize the cacoon is open so the caterpillar will go out of the cacoon and form another if it can so leave your caterpillar alone.
