Secondary succession is an ongoing process. Communities are not static entities there are many factors that are acting upon them. Major disasters play some roles in changing the direction of these communities. Volcanic eruptions, major forest fires, severe drought or even diseases that kill off major plant stands will begin a regrowth of plant life. This new plant life will not be the same plants that were there before the disaster but will pave the way for their return.
