Skua birds are primarily found in the Southern Hemisphere, particularly in sub-Antarctic regions, including the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the Antarctic Peninsula. Some species, like the great skua, can also be found in the North Atlantic during breeding season, particularly along the coasts of Iceland and the UK. They inhabit coastal areas, often nesting on cliffs or open tundra near the sea. During migration, skuas can be seen over open ocean waters.

Antarctic skua breed on Antarctica's beaches and otherwise live elsewhere. Skua chicks, like all bird chicks, are subject to being preyed upon by any raptor interested in feeding its young.
An Arctic skua is a seabird of the skua family, Latin name Stercorarius parasiticus.
These days, Skua have learned to hang around scientific station garbage areas where discarded food from humans is generally plentiful. Skua can live for 25 years, so their habit of feeding in these ways can be learned and practiced. Skua also feed on breeding penguin colonies -- capturing eggs and unprotected checks to feed their own young. Unprotected sea mammal pups are also targets for Skua.
