An Irishman established a monastery there around the year 563. He was known as Saint Columba and revitalized the Celtic Church at a time when Rome was dwindling. Monasticism in England and Ireland, and in much of Europe, owed much to Columba and Iona.

Columba (571-597AD) is one of Britain's greatest Celtic saints, anlong with Patrick and David. He was born in Ireland but travelled to Scotland in 563 and evangelised the Picts and Scots there. He died on the Scottish isle of Iona, and was buried there, but later his remains were removed back to Ireland where he is buried at Downpatrick, County Down. Columba's greatest legacy is the revitalisation of monasticism in the British Isles.
St. Columba is perhaps better known for what he did in Scotland rather than what he did in his native Ireland. The rise of monasticism in the western part of Scotland was attributed to Columba. His base of ministry was the Isle of Iona where a monastic centre still thrives today.
Strictly speaking, St. Columba didn't take Christianity anywhere (in the sense of introducing it). What he did do though, is leave his native Ireland to begin a revival of monasticism in western Scotland. His ministry was centred on Iona Island, a settlement that stands today as a popular mecca for religious ascetics.
St. Columba, also known as Columba of Iona, was an Irish missionary who played a significant role in the spread of Christianity in Scotland. He is highly regarded as one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland and is credited with founding many monasteries, including the famous monastery on the island of Iona. St. Columba is considered a key figure in the Christianization of the Picts and the establishment of the Celtic Church in Scotland.
He lived in Ireland for over 40 years and spent about 34 years in Scotland. During those times he lived in different parts of both countries. He is particularly associated with the island of Iona in Scotland.
